smut lab is ray ray sunshine
I’ve been performing and designing for burlesque for over a decade and I believe the stage is the most freeing place in the world. I’m contrary to the norm by nature, for better or worse, and if you give me a rule, I’ll respectfully break it. This doesn’t make me an ideal corporate employee (or troupe member lol) but it does lend itself to some wierdly hot performances. And some memorable design work.
What you won’t get from me are rhinestone encrusted corsets and panel skirt sets. And I won’t recreate another designer’s work. But if you’re willing, I’ll give you more than that: a performance partner.
Costumes are a huge part of an act. As much as fashion and theatrical costuming can tell a story, so too can burlesque costumes. And they should! Your costume is the first communication to the audience that you make, and it’s speaking loudly before you even take a step. I think that voice should be impactful and surprising. Rhinestones are beautiful — I love them too— but they are a bit of a cheat code. A visually striking, and easy (if you can afford it) way to let the audience know that what they’re seeing is burlesque. But is the universal language of striptease crusted corsets and floofy robes?
Nah. I don’t think so. I think it can be way more if you throw away the measuring stick.
So go on, then. Break some rules. I’ll help you do it.
It’s my favorite thing in the world.
Love, Ray Ray
